Bike UMD

UMD bike week 2019: March 30 to april 6

DOTS and University Recreation and Wellness (RecWell) have partnered to host seven days of cycling fun! Activities include bike swag giveaways, group bike rides, a bike commuter breakfast and a maintenance class. New this year, cyclists can share their favorite tips and routes with other members of UMD’s bike community at our free “bikes of the round table” lunch. The week will culminate with the student bike parade and contest.

BikeUMD supports the thriving cycling community at the University of Maryland.

With a focus on safety and physical wellness, BikeUMD provides campus with free bike repair resources, covered bike parking, discounted equipment, classes on bike safety and group rides.

The University of Maryland has been named a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists for its wealth of cycling resources.

Getting Started as a UMD Cyclist: Bike Registration

Registration through Bike Index is required for all bikes on campus, and is available to anyone with a UID. Your Bike Index registration provides a record of ownership that aids authorities in locating the owner of a stolen bike, and helps with the planning and implementation of bicycle infrastructure improvements at the university. Only registered bicycles are eligible for DOTS’ free lock-cutting service.

  • Read the biking regulations, which include critical information regarding safety and bike parking.
  • Register your bike online at Bike Index (how to navigate Bike Index).
  • Bring your bike and confirmation email to the DOTS office in Regents Drive Garage or the RecWell Bike Shop at 0249 Cole and pick up your registration sticker.

Individuals who don’t own a bike can still enjoy the benefits of cycling through mBIKE bikeshare program. This multi-award winning program empowers students, employees and visitors to take quick bike trips on and around campus using professionally maintained bikes. Trips are $3 an hour for non-members. Members get each first hour of their rental for free. To see locations of bikes, membership options and more, please visit the mBIKE website.

The mBike bikeshare program is owned by UMD and the City of College Park and managed by Zagster.

We provide secure bike parking and shower facilities as an incentive for commuters who choose to travel to campus via bicycle. The Bike Commuter Incentive program is intended to facilitate controlled access to these facilities for participants enrolled in our sustainable transportation program, Smart Commute.
