About the program

The University of Maryland Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) will provide affordable refurbished bikes to students while reducing environmental waste through a new bike donation program, Bicycle Recycle. Bikes donated to DOTS will be rebuilt by RecWell Bike Shop mechanics and sold at a discount to students beginning in September of 2019 at the annual DOTS Transportation Fair.

DOTS identifies and removes as many as 200 abandoned bicycles from the UMD campus each year. These bikes are retained as required by law for a year before DOTS donates them to community partners. However, after a year in storage, many of the bikes have deteriorated to the point of being unusable and ultimately end up in a landfill.

“Through Bicycle Recycle, we aim to cultivate a culture of donation rather than abandonment among students who no longer need their bikes,” says DOTS assistant director Anna McLaughlin. “The program will also reduce environmental waste that can result from abandoned bikes, and further promote cycling as a sustainable form of transportation by redistributing bikes to UMD students.”

The program is made possible by a Sustainability Fund Award from the UMD Office of Sustainability.

Where to Donate Your Bike

Bikes may be donated at the DOTS Office in Regents Drive Garage or at the RecWell Bike Shop during regular business hours throughout the year. Currently, the RecWell Bike Shop is closed for the interim and will reopen for the summer on May 28. Through support from UMD’s Trash to Treasure, Bicycle Recycle donation stations will also be open in May:

  • Friday, May 17, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Diner, Ellicott Community

  • Tuesday, May 21, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Leonardtown Community Center

  • Wednesday, May 22, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at South Campus Dining Hall
