The following are brief descriptions of our student positions. Some positions have continuous openings,
while others have limited availability.  Please contact the Human Resources Office at (301) 314-7261

STUDENT IT ASSISTANT
Student IT Assistants are vital to ensuring the smooth operations of the Department of Transportation Services.  Preference will be given to candidates who can devote at least 3 semesters to the position.  Graduating seniors are not eligible for this position.  Applications should be received by 4 p.m. on
Friday, June 6, 2008 for best consideration.

 Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-providing technical troubleshooting support for Windows computers, peripherals and software
-use, installation, configuration and deployment of Windows XP Professional Operating Systems
-installation of software and software upgrades, internal and external hardware peripherals
-generation and maintenance of documentation of various tasks and procedures

 This student should:
-have general PC hardware familiarity
-be able to use and create macros, templates, spreadsheets, and databases with MS Office Pro
-be able to work independently on long and short-term projects
-be able to lift computer equipment (~25-30lbs)
-have experience with Auto-CAD

 *Geographic Information System experience desired but not mandatory.

 

STUDENT DRIVERS (Continuously hiring)
DOTS Shuttle-UM drivers provide safe, dependable, on-time transportation to University of Maryland students, faculty, and staff.  The position involves paid training, flexible hours, and advancement opportunities.  A pay rate of $6.55/hr during training applies which increases to $10/hr after licensing.  Complete the online application making sure to indicate the position for which you are applying. Additional Requirements:
- excellent time management skills
- maintaining punctuality and adhering to Shuttle UM attendance policies
- passing a pre-employment DOT physical and drug screening
-the successful completion of approximately 60 hours of paid training to obtain a  Class B Commercial Driver’s License 
-training will include some evenings and weekends
-maintaining a minimum of 12 driving hours per week

 

Human Resources Assistant (Limited availability - please call for more information.)
The team of Human Resource Assistants works with the Human Resources Office in facilitating the hiring process for full-time and student positions for DOTS, as well as promoting a fun, supportive and professional work environment. The position requires approximately 12-16 hours a week with $8.25/hr compensation. Complete the online application making sure to indicate the position for which you are applying. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-conducting interviews and assisting with the overall hiring process
-providing payroll-related information to, and processing payroll documents for, new staff
-planning and participating in recruitment events
-working collaboratively with management and staff to facilitate positive relationships

This student should:
-demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills
-be team-oriented, flexible and able to effectively adapt to change
-have strong interpersonal and organizational skills

 

Training Advisor (Limited availability - please call for more information.)
The team of Training Advisors reports to the Training Manager in facilitating orientation programs for new employees and assisting in the coordination of learning experiences for student and full-time staff. The position requires approximately 10-15 hours a week with $8.25/hr compensation.Complete the online application making sure to indicate the position for which you are applying. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-facilitating existing training programs in diversity, customer service, time management and sexual harassment prevention
-assisting in the planning and production of large-scale community events

This student should:
-possess excellent communication skills
-appreciate learning, involvement and multiculturalism

 

Marketing Assistant (Limited availability - please call for more information.)
The team of Marketing Assistants reports to the Public Relations Manager in implementing strategies to effectively market and distribute information about the Department of Transportation Services. The position requires approximately 10-15 hours a week (some Saturday work required), with $8.25/hr compensation.  Complete the online application making sure to indicate the position for which you are applying. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-distribution of departmental information to the University community
-representation of the department at University events
-assisting graphics team in creation of advertising campaigns using fliers, posters, brochures and other promotional materials

This student should:
-have strong, interpersonal skills and an enthusiasm to interact with the public
-working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required
-knowledge of graphics programs a plus

 

Graphics Specialist (Limited availability - please call for more information.)
The team of Graphics Specialists reports to the Marketing and Public Affairs Manager in developing graphical material that will aid the effective dissemination of departmental information and the marketing strategies of the DOTS. The position requires approximately 10-15 hours a week with $11.15/hr compensation. Complete the online application making sure to indicate the position for which you are applying. -production of fliers, brochures, posters, and Shuttle-UM bus schedules
-formatting information for posting to the department’s website

This student should:
-have strong, working knowledge of layout and graphic presentation principles
-have knowledge of Adobe design and layout products
*Knowledge of QuarkXpress and other industry-standard software a plus.

 

Student Parking Enforcement Aide (Continuously hiring)
The team of Parking Enforcement Aides works with the Enforcement Staff in ensuring compliance with the University’s parking regulations.  The position requires approximately 15-20 hours a week (in at least 3-hr increments) with $8.25/hr compensation.  Complete the online application making sure to indicate the position for which you are applying. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-tracking of parking permits
-enforcement of parking lot policies, including towing and ticketing

 

PIT Crew
The PIT Crew staff operates the Department of Transportation Services' Mortorist Assistance Vehicle program (MAV) providing free lockout, jumstart, tire change, and gas transportation services to anyone on University premises and assists in the department's Student Ticket Reviews program. PIT Crew staff also provide customer service at the department's lobby information desk. The position requires approximately 15-20 hours a week with $8.25/hr compensation and opportunities for pay increases every semester.  Complete the online application making sure to indicate the position for which you are applying. -be able to work outside in varied types of weather including rain, snow and heat
-possess a valid driver's license

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-working all seven football games each fall, all 18 basketball games, and a percentage of other special events parking needs during the course of the year
